How to get rid of hiccups
Finding a way to get rid of hiccups can be difficult, and the same method doesn’t work for everyone. Hiccups are essentially involuntary contractions of the diaphragm. This muscle separates your chest from your abdomen. There are many different things that can trigger hiccups. Eating too much and drinking too much alcohol are two of the most common ones. You may also get the hiccups if you drink a lot of carbonated beverages or experience a sudden temperature change. Excitement or stress can also cause the hiccups.
If your hiccups last for a long time, then they are likely caused by nerve damage, and medical treatment is needed. However, if you just need to know how to get rid of hiccups you get occasionally, then you may want to try one of the many “treatments” people swear by. Most cases of the hiccups go away on their own, but they can be quite annoying in the meantime.
One method for getting rid of hiccups that works for many people is simply distraction. Try to find something to do and forget about your hiccups. They often disappear when you aren’t thinking about them. If the hiccups are so severe that you can’t stop thinking about them, then you may want to try one of the many other methods people have used throughout the years.
Another way many people find that helps them to get rid of hiccups is holding their breath and counting to ten. If that doesn’t work, then you can try exhaling completely and holding your breath as long as you possibly can. Another way to get rid of hiccups is to put sugar under your tongue. An unexpected and sudden scare may also do the trick. You also may try to swallow repeatedly and see if that helps to get rid of hiccups. Another method that works great is laughter. Try to think of something that makes you laugh hysterically. You may have to watch a favorite old movie or sitcom if you really need something to laugh about.
Some people also find that a tablespoon of peanut butter works wonders in getting rid of hiccups. A large sip of lemon juice may also help you get rid of hiccups. Eating pickles also helps some people get rid of hiccups.
If none of these methods work, you may also try relaxation. Yoga and other meditation exercises can help you relax enough to get rid of your hiccups. If you can’t practice any of these physical meditation exercises, then just sit quietly, close your eyes and clear your mind. Stop thinking of all the things that scare you or stress you out. Imagine a calm place where everything is quiet and nothing bothers you. Also remember to focus your breathing and imagine the hiccups floating out of your chest and out into the air around you. This quiet place is also a great place to go when you feel stressed and don’t have the hiccups.
