How to get rid of possums

Getting rid of possums is a chore, but it’s very necessary if you want to keep them from making a mess in your yard.  Possums are those little furry critters that love to wreak havoc in homes and yards.  The possum is actually native to Australia, and the North American form of this animal is technically called an opossum, although many people refer to it simply as a possum.  They’re known for getting into outdoor garbage cans, building dens inside attics, and bothering pets.

Pest control experts say the only tried and true method of getting rid of possums is by trapping and removing them.  You can always pay an expert to do this, although there are some other ways you can try to drive possums out of your home on your own.  Start by using a broom to chase the possum out of your house.  Getting rid of possums that are inside your home always begins with driving the animal out.

It’s a good idea to have someone help you for a variety of reasons.  For one thing, possums can get agitated when they feel cornered.  You should also have someone watching the outside of your house on the side where you think the animal got in.  This way you’ll have someone who actually sees how the possum gets out of the house when you drive it out.  Then you must be prepared to immediately seal that opening as soon as the animal is out.  You should also look for other points of entry where the animal may be getting into your attic and seal those off.

Next, you should place lights in the animal’s former hiding place, both inside and out.  Keep the area well lit because possums like darkness.  The same holds true for possums that have taken up residence outside your home but in your yard.  Sometimes getting rid of possums is as simple as adding more lights around your house.

Another surefire method for getting rid of possums is using dog or cat hair.  The next time your pet gets a haircut, sprinkle some of that hair around the area where the possum likes to stay.  This will discourage the animal from coming onto your property.  Ammonia and mothballs also work wonders in this respect, especially if you need something to use inside your attic to prevent possums from wanting to come inside.  You also might try marking the outside of your yard with predator urine.  You can purchase fox urine from a pest control expert.  If the possum thinks foxes are around your house, then it won’t want to come near it.

Also remember to keep the lids on your outdoor garbage cans and try installing a light over them.  If there is no easy source of food in your yard, then the possums won’t be interested in coming over to visit.

Getting rid of possums is easy if you know how to discourage them from coming into your yard.  All it takes is a little time and effort.
